“Jerzees One – a big, sweet Thoroughbred gelding – retired from racing at the end of his 3-year-old year to begin the transition into the world of equestrian sports.
As a horse transitions from racing to off-track life, they go through a tremendous amount of change: different feed, routine, footing, socialization, job requirements and more. It can be physically and mentally taxing, probably more so than we can truly appreciate.

While Jerzee navigated these changes with ease mentally, the physical challenges were more difficult to overcome. His body was slow to grow a winter coat that year, and the coat that did come in was long, coarse and dull. The change from being in a stall and protected from the elements to the mud, weather and uneven terrain of pasture life was a difficult one.
Battling Rain Rot
As his turnout increased, he began to develop rain rot. We tried to treat it topically and even with oral antibiotics – but it continued to worsen, becoming systemic literally from head to hoof.
Then, a friend and a veterinarian both recommended Wellpride Fish Oil. The friend’s horse had been extremely sensitive to skin irritations, but since adding it daily to his feed, his skin issues had resolved completely.

Within 2-3 weeks, we noticed that his rain rot seemed to be dissipating and new hair was growing in. Within 5-6 weeks, his skin was clear, and his coat was shinier and becoming thicker.
